Get your widgets ready for Android

May 21, 2010

Looking to make your widget available to Vodafone customers with Android phones? Below are a few key questions, with answers, that you need to ask yourself before you get started:

Is your widget optimized for finger touch interaction?

  • All Android phones Vodafone will offer this year have touch screens
  • Some also have 5-way navigation hardware

Does your widget support correct screen sizes?

  • Suggest following fluid layout principles to design UI that scales across many resolutions, pixel densities – details here
  • Target resolutions for Android phones:
    • Low: 240×320 (Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro)
    • Medium: 320×480 (HTC Legend)
    • High: 480×800 (HTC Desire), 480×854 (Sony Ericsson Xperia X10)
    • Follow UE guidance on viewport and icon sizes

Which JIL Handset APIs does your widget require?

Have you tested your widget?

  • Three options for testing (developer.vodafone.com/tools-and-resources):
    • Android phones loaded in Perfecto Mobile system for remote testing available now!
    • Debug-enabled, SIM unlocked build of Apps Manager to install on Android 1.6/2.1 phones coming soon!
    • Updated Vodafone WDK emulator with pre-defined Android configurations coming soon!

Have you updated your widget via widget.vodafone.com/dev or JIL.org?

  • New “Vodafone Apps Manager (Android)” platform option must be selected for your widget to be available for download by customers
  • Since current widget run-times for S60 phones and Samsung H1/M1 only support the JIL 1.0 GPS Location and LaunchApplication APIs, if you want to use more APIs you should upload a new widget specifically for “Vodafone Apps Manager (Android)” platform rather than updating a previous submission
